A pregnant woman, identified as Victoria John, was found dead in the Okutukutu area along the Isaac Boro Expressway in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday.
The cause of the death of 24-year-old Victoria is
generating controversy as three different versions have been given as
the likely cause.
The first version, our correspondent learnt, was that the pregnant woman was knocked down by a hit-and run driver.
Victoria was said to have been knocked down on Thursday, while the driver of the unidentified vehicle sped off.
Another version said the pregnant woman, probably suffering from dizziness, collapsed.
She was said to have hit her head on the pavement of the main road, and before help could come her way, she died.
However, the third version said the pregnant woman was a victim of armed robbers.
She
was said to have been waylaid by a group of armed robbers and when the
robbers discovered she had no money on her, they allegedly strangled her
to death.
But a man who claimed to be an eyewitness said the woman collapsed as she was walking on the road.
He said, “The
woman collapsed on her way to the Opolo area and hit her head on the
pavement of the expressway. To me, her pregnancy was up to seven months
old.
“If she had got quick medical attention, she would have probably survived. The incident occurred around 7am on Thursday.”
When
contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command,
Mr. Asinim Butswat, said the corpse of Victoria was found about 8.30am.
Butswat said the cause of death could not be ascertained, but the police were suspecting a case of hit-and-run.
He said their suspicion was borne out of the fact that there were visible marks on the deceased’s head and back.
Butswat said, “The
deceased was identified as Victoria John and she was 24 years old. The
corpse has been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre,
Yenagoa for autopsy. The cause of death could not be ascertained.
However, there were visible marks on her head and back. We are
suspecting a case of hit-and-run.”
But the
Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Vincent
Jack, said the information the sector got was that the pregnant woman
was robbed.
Jack said, “The woman was robbed
in the early hours of Thursday and in the process, she died. There were
no signs of bruises, according to reports from our officers on the field
