There has been widespread outrage as a former
German police officer, Detlef Guenzel, was sentenced to a mere eight and
a half years in prison for murdering and dismembering a man and eating the intestines and manhood, 'to satisfy his cannibal fetishes', reports Daily Mail.
The court heard that in 2013, Guenzel murdered and dismembered Wojciech Stempniewicz while listening to pop music.
He then buried the
body parts in his garden.
While
Stempniewicz’s family was hoping Guenzel received a maximum sentence of
15 years, prosecutors were only seeking a ten-year sentence.
In the end, prosecutors backed off their demand because the victim, Stempniewicz, 'had said he wanted to die'.
Guenzel
met Stempniewicz on a website for people who enjoyed cannibalism. They
contacted each other via email, text message and telephone before
eventually setting up a face to face meeting.
That
meeting took place on November 4, 2013, when Guenzel picked up his
victim from the train station and took him back to his house.
Guenzel then strangled Stempniewicz to death using a rope before dismembering the body.
During sentencing, Judge Birgit Wiegand said:
"He was found guilty of murder and disturbing the peace of the dead."
Prosecutors uncovered a 50 minute long video that shows Guenzel chopping up the corpse while listening to music.
