About twelve shops were reportedly destroyed last Wednesday, in a fire outbreak at the popular Oshodi market in Lagos. The fire broke out following a terrible power surge.
An eye witness at the recent Oshodi market tragedy, Bolanle Oseni, spoke to newsmen, explaining how the incident had affected the electricity connections in the neighborhood.
Mrs. Bolanle Oseni, the Iyaloja of Afijalo, according to The Nation revealed that men from the fire service had arrived the scene to help put out the fire, though upon arrival their engines experienced some glitches.
I went to ease myself when I saw smoke from my toilet. I told my brother to ask the viligante in our neighbourhood what the problem was. Immediately, I informed neighbours who could assist us in putting out the fire. It took us three hours to put out the fire. Even when the fire service men arrived, their engine malfunctioned. It is a painful incident. They lost properties worth N7million to the fire. It is a pathetic incident,” she said.
Bolanle also called on the authorities of the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area to help the affected traders with some support or the other following the incident.
Adeola Olajobi, Executive Secretary of the Oshodi-Isolo LGA on visiting the scene showed deep worries on the spate of fire outbreaks at the market, even as he promised to help out the affected traders.
Only six months ago, a similar fire incident broke out at the market, consuming properties worth about N5 million, amongst other things.
