The community of Eruku in the Ekiti local
government area of Kwara State, is currently sitting on a keg of gun
power which could explode any moment after some suspected Fulani herdsmen strangled a vigilante official, Raphael Dada, to death while a farmer was seriously injured.
The four-man gang are said to be cattle-rearers of the Bororo-Fulani tribe.
It
was gathered that the 48-year-old Dada was strangled to death at the
Omi-Arin farm in the community by the Fulani men on April 1.
According
to the reports, the deceased’s wife, Elizabeth, had gone to the
family's farm to pluck cashew nuts on the fateful day but was denied
access to the farm by the herdsmen and she reportedly rushed back home
to inform her husband who armed himself with gun and cutlass and headed
for the farm to caution the gang.
But when he did
not return late in the afternoon, the worried family traced him to the
farm where his remains were found on a tree.
The
assailants also allegedly opened fire on a farmer, Babalola Joseph,
while harvesting his crops in his farm and injured him on the leg and
back.
The incident, it was learnt, was reported at the Ekiti Police Division.
The
Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ajayi
Okansanmi, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had swung into
action and are on the trail of the assailants.
"I
am aware of the incident and the police have commenced investigations
on the attacks. We have restored peace to the community and efforts are
ongoing to apprehend the assailants."
