Members of Islamist sect, Boko Haram,
were said to have entered a village in Borno state pretending to spread
the message of Islam but opened fire on the Muslims who were gathered
inside the mosque.
According to reports, the
jihadists had arrived in cars late on Sunday , and had convinced people
to gather at a mosque in the remote village of Kwajafa, under the
pretense of preaching.
A witness Simeon Buba said the men had opened fire on the people inside the mosque and bystanders killing at least 24 people.
"People didn't know the Boko Haram men came for attack because they lied to our people that they came for preaching," said Buba in a telephone conversation.
"They opened fire on them and killed many people," he said, adding that houses were set on fire.
Some
people were being treated for gunshot wounds and burns at a hospital in
the Borno state town of Biu on Monday, a source there said.
